28 Dec 2009Let me get one thing straight. I do NOT want to position myself as a social media expert. There's already enough wannabes trying to do exactly that. I don't consider myself an expert. All I want to achieve is help people find the tools to effectively manage their social media strategy.
I plan to put some energy into demystifying the how and why of social media to people who would prefer to mock it than learn how to use it.
To do this, I aim to get beyond the "I don't want to read what people had for breakfast" mentality, and teach people how to look at SM as a community. I want to teach people the importance of sharing, and even just teach people what social bookmarks are and how to use them.
I'd like to help people use social media in an efficient and effective way, and in a sense, learn how to do this myself (particularly the efficient part).
I find that once you get beyond what social media is, the sheer volume of information available is overwhelming. Unless your time on social media has some benefit, regardless of whether it is getting you more work, or just giving you a social outlet, it can be quite easy to spend your entire time on it.
I want to focus on building strategies that enable the effective sharing of your message across all your selected social media platforms, and also strategies for listening effectively to the messages you get from your community.
When you are getting 300 updates a minute just on twitter alone, you are never going to be able to read everything. You would need to read 5 messages per second 24/7/365 to keep up with that rate of posting - THEREFORE it is obvious that you can't read everybody's post. There needs to be some system in place that can remove the tweets that are conversations between others that you may not need to listen to. The ones that are just smilies, and don't add any value, and then the truly valuable pieces of information.
I truly believe that you want to follow as many people as you can provided what they have to say is useful to you. The more people you are able to listen to, the more knowledgeable you will become.
Finally there are LOTS of social media networks. Being on all of them is not very practical. So I'll show people that it's more effective for you to interact on the networks that are most worthwhile for you.
