25 Nov 2009One of the key comments anyone makes when they are considering using social media is "When do I get any REAL work done". I've got to say, if this is you, you're not alone. I've got the exact same feelings on the subject. You almost need to devote all your time into keeping your social media presence up to date. So, I've been trying to put my web programming knowledge to good use so I could work out how to make it easier, and I'm getting closer t a solution.
At this link http://www.facebook.com/MichaelPhippsAU?v=app_185032704499&ref=profile you will see a duplicate of this blog in "Facebook" style. What I've actually done is built a facebook application that allows Facebook users to view my blog from within Facebook.
As I update my blog at http://michaelphipps.com the facebook version is updated immediately. This isn't an RSS feed. This is actually requesting a page from my website, and displaying it in a Facebook page.
Why would you want to do this?
1) You will be able to put your content where the traffic is.
2) You won't have to do any extra work. You update your website, and facebook is up to date instantly.
At the moment I am still exploring this functionality. For a non-techy person it's practically impossible to achieve. My goal is to make this sort of thing accessible to regular business folk so they can use it as a tool to build their business online. When I've made progress in making this sort of thing more accessible to normal people, I'll be posting my findings at http://www.facebook.com/pages/InternetPro/181067854839 so head over there now and become a fan, so you'll be among the first business people to take advantage of this. I publish heaps of great information there anyway, so it's worthwhile becoming a fan in the meantime.
I hope the idea excites you as much as it excites me!
BTW! If you are techy you can try working out how to do this yourself now. I am using Drupal for my CMS, and Drupal for Facebook to communicate with the Facebook application that delivers the content to the end user.
